Planting and Care Tips
Plant
To plant, choose a site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root flare, and place the tree so the flare sits at ground level. After backfilling with native soil, water deeply and apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.
Feed
Early spring before new growth appears, using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Avoid applying high-nitrogen lawn fertilizers near the root zone.
Water
The Bloodgood thrives with evenly moist soil, especially during its first two years, and will benefit from deep watering once a week during dry periods to prevent leaf scorch.
Prune
Pruning is best carried out in late winter or mid-summer to avoid sap bleeding. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches and lightly thin the canopy to maintain its natural shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as this variety looks best with its rounded, flowing form.
Exposure
Full sun; Partial Shade
