Planting and Care Tips

Plant

Best planted in spring or fall;
Choose a location with partial to full shade. Soil should be rich, well-drained, and consistently moist with lots of organic matter.

Feed

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. A light feeding of compost or fertilizer mid-summer can help maintain vigor, but avoid over-fertilizing.

Water

Keep soil consistently moist, especially in hot summer months. About 1 inch of water per week is ideal. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool.

Prune

Remove yellowing or damaged leaves as needed. Cut back all foliage to the ground after the first frost in fall. Deadhead flower stalks after blooms fade to direct energy back into the plant.

Exposure

Thrives in full shade to part shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade is best. Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves.
