Planting and Care Tips

Plant

Plant in the spring or early fall. Choose a spot with full sun (at least six hours of direct sun per day). While 'Cassian' can tolerate some partial shade, it produces the most impressive flowers when grown in full sun.

This grass adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay, but requires good drainage. Avoid planting in areas where water collects.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the nursery pot and about the same depth.Set the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.Backfill the hole with soil, tamp down gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.

Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart to allow for their mature size and spread.

Feed

'Cassian' is a light feeder and generally low-maintenance regarding nutrients. A single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient to encourage healthy growth.

Water

Water deeply and regularly for the first few months to help the root system get established. Aim for once or twice a week, depending on rainfall. Once established, 'Cassian' fountain grass is very drought-tolerant and rarely needs extra water. Provide supplemental water during extended periods of extreme heat.

Prune

Late winter or early spring before new growth begins.Cut the entire clump back to the ground to give the plant a fresh start with new foliage in the spring.

Exposure

Provide full sun exposure for the most vigorous growth and plentiful pink-tinted, bottlebrush blooms. Partial shade: While the plant will tolerate some partial shade, too little sun can result in fewer flowers and potentially floppy growth.
