Planting and Care Tips

Plant

To plant a Sweetbay Magnolia, select a spot with moist, acidic, well-drained soil, though it can also adapt to wetter areas such as near ponds or streams. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, place the tree level with the ground, and backfill with native soil and compost.

Feed

Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants to encourage healthy growth.

Water

Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first few years, as Sweetbay prefers evenly moist soil and does not tolerate prolonged drought.

Prune

Prune sparingly right after flowering, removing only dead or crossing branches to maintain a natural shape.

Exposure

Full sun, Partial sun
