Lagerstroemia 'PIILAG-VII' PP27,303

This new crapemyrtle has distinctly different, carnation-like, glowing red flowers that show beautifully against the lustrous dark green foliage. Foliage turns orange-red in fall. The habit is upright, but compact, with dense branching. Like the others in the Magic series, Ruffled Red reblooms in late summer if the first flush of flowers is deadheaded. It is also resistant to Cercospora leaf spot and powdery mildew, which is quite a breeding accomplishment in red crapes.

Planting and Care Tips

Plant

Plant Ruffled Red Magic™ Crape Myrtle in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper, set the plant level with the ground, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

Feed

Balanced fertilizer in spring will help; avoid over-fertilizing so you get more blooms and not just foliage.

Water

Moderate water when establishing; once established it’s relatively drought tolerant.

Prune

Late winter/early spring is best. Remove dead or crossing branches. For size control, selectively prune taller branches. Avoid heavy “topping”.

Exposure

Full sun
