Thuja occidentalis 'American Pillar'

The Full Speed A Hedge® American Pillar is one of our most popular varieties due to its fast, full growth. After the first year, this tree grows more than 3 feet every year until it reaches its mature height. Plus, since it's extremely narrow, it’s an ideal screen for even tighter spaces.

USDA Zones: 3-8

Planting and Care Tips

Plant

Place the American Pillar Arborvitae in well-draining soil with the root ball level to the ground, spacing about 3 feet apart for a privacy screen, and water deeply after planting to settle the roots.

Feed

The American Pillar should not require any extra fertilizer unless you notice slow or stalled growth.

Water

Water your tree regularly for the first six months. Once established, rainwater should be sufficient.

Prune

Lightly trim in late spring or early summer to maintain a narrow, uniform shape, removing only new growth and avoiding cuts into older brown wood.

Exposure

This tree thrives in full sun, with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight per day.
