Planting and Care Tips
Plant
To plant, select a site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and protection from strong winds. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root flare, and place the tree so that the flare sits level with the ground. Backfill gently with native soil, water deeply, and apply a mulch layer around the base to help conserve moisture while keeping the mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Feed
Fertilizing should be done lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage overly vigorous growth that disrupts the tree’s natural cascading habit.
Water
The Tamukeyama prefers soil that stays evenly moist, especially while young. During dry periods, deep weekly watering is recommended to prevent leaf scorch, though once established, it is relatively tolerant of summer heat compared to many other Japanese maples.
Prune
Pruning should be minimal and performed in late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. Remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches, taking care not to alter the tree’s elegant weeping structure.
Exposure
Filtered sun, Full sun, Partial sun
